La identidad de género es uno de los aspectos más fundamentales de la vida. Habitualmente, se asigna el sexo de una persona al nacer, convirtiéndose a partir de este momento en un hecho social y legal. Sin embargo, un número relativamente pequeño de individuos tienen problemas con pertenecer al sexo registrado al nacer. Lo mismo puede ocurrir con personas intersexuales cuyos cuerpos, y en ocasiones su anatomía genital, incorporan ambos o ciertos aspectos tanto de la fisiología masculina como femenina.
